19 May - 29 September 2018
curated by Andrea Lewis
The exhibition 'Print Promises' explores the visual richness of printmaking in South Africa. The remarkable and different manner in which South African artists have turned to print – whether in response to various injustices or exploring an artistic expression – are presented in dialogue with prints by artists who are in other countries, contexts or even centuries.
Printmaking has long been a medium that can easily be mistaken for a drawing; it is in fact a multifaceted discipline that involves a wide variety of techniques and materials. Whilst the artworks in the exhibition represent the major printmaking techniques, it gives but a hint of the abundant possibilities of style and practice found in printmaking.
The exhibition displays a small selection from over 3000 prints in ISANG’s permanent collection and brings together a diverse cross-section of prints – from etchings, relief prints and lithographs to screen-prints. This exhibition, in a nutshell, aims to show the beauty of printmaking in different techniques and style.
